SUBJECT:     Status Report on Aquatic Center Renovations

In October 2006, the Commission authorized staff to proceed with Jerry Resnick Aquatic Center renovations as outlined in the Department’s 2005 FRDAP Grant Application.  The project has a total price tag of $400,000 with the State providing 50% of the funding and consists of the installation of a water slide, water playground, restroom renovations, picnic area and a small tot playground.

During our discussion with the Commission, the Commission authorized the first phase of the project, which was the installation of the water slide. We are pleased to state that this component of the project is moving forward and is on track for a March 1, 2007 opening as originally reported.  With the water slide now under construction, we are prepared to turn our attention to the next phase of the project – the engineering and installation of the water playground, and the tot playground.

Prior to moving forward with phase two of the project we want to make sure that the Commission is still in favor of completing the project as phase two will start to encumber the State’s funding portion of the $400,000.00.  With a City/State 50-50 match we have expended approximately 50% of the City’s $200,000 match and the second phase will require us to start to spend some of the State’s match and once we begin to spend State funds we will be obligated to complete the project and spend the balance of City’s 50% match, which is approximately $100,000.

If the Commission’s consensus tonight is to proceed with the completion of the total project, we will initiate the planning process for phase two and present related agenda items to the Commission during the months of April and May.

Thank you.
