Proclamation
Whereas, January 21, 2008 is a Federal holiday honoring Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr., during which time the nation pauses to recognize and
appreciate the resounding impact that Dr. King had on our national psyche; and
Whereas, on January 21, 2008 the nation will recommit itself
to Dr. King’s dream of an America where the dignity of every person is
respected and where people are judged not by the color of their skin, but by
the content of their character; and
Whereas, when Martin Luther King, Jr., came to the nation’s
capital in the summer of 1963, he came to inspire
Whereas, Dr. King’s dream was one of hope, justice and
brotherhood, which took hold in the hearts of men and women across the county
and continues to speak to millions both at home and abroad; and
Whereas, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day affords our nation an
opportunity to take pride in the strides that have been made towards Dr. King’s
vision, and give us a chance to recognize and remember that considerable work
remains to be done; and
Whereas, on January 21, 2008 we reflect on the legal equality
championed by Dr. King as well as all the heroes of the civil rights movement,
and we acknowledge the need for us to continue our work to protect the promise
of our Declaration of Independence and guarantee the equal rights of every
citizen; and
Now, therefore, I, John “Jack” Brady, Mayor of the City of North
Lauderdale, Florida, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Charter and
Code of Ordinances of the City of
Martin Luther King, Jr.
I
do hereby further encourage all residents to observe this special day with
appropriate civic, community, and service programs and activities in honor of
Dr. King’s life and legacy.
