SUBJECT:     Miss Broward County Pageant

Ms. Brenda Edwards, a City resident, recently approached the City staff about holding a Miss Broward County Pageant in the City Gymnasium located in the North Lauderdale School Facility.  At that time, we explained to Ms. Edwards the City does not have a formal policy to rent out the gym, therefore the City has to be involved in the event to control the access and activities at the facility. In addition, the staff mentioned the fact that the City is currently in the process of marketing the facility for a potential sale/lease agreement and may not be available at the time of the event.

The City, in conjunction with Ms. Edward’s organization, has held numerous Pageants in the Gymnasium throughout the years.  By coordinating with the South Florida Talent Search, the City offers this event to our community, while orchestrating and planning the majority of the work through this organization.  The City’s role mainly consists of oversight, gym set-up/break down, and community advertising.

The City of Tamarac has held the Junior Miss Orange Bowl Pageant for the Tri-City Area for year…so this type of event is not new or unique to this area.

With the success of past pageants, the process to select a new Miss Broward County needs to get underway.  Ms. Edwards organization is requesting permission to use the City Gym on Saturday, March 24, 2007 for a pageant.  As with past years, the City’s contribution will be minor and consist of set-up, oversight and some basic advertising.

It is the intention of the South Florida Talent Search to solicit funds from sponsors and charge a minimal fee for tickets.  All funds that are collected will go towards the top three prizes.  It is not our intention to use any City Funds for pageant prizes.

Should the Commission wish for staff to proceed with this event, the following motion is in order:

“A motion authorizing and directing the City Administration to coordinate with South Florida Talent Search Inc., to hold a Miss Tri-City Beauty Pageant on Saturday -  March 24th , 2007.”
