TO: Mayor
and City Commission

Recreation Director
SUBJECT:
As you know, 2008 North Lauderdale Days event is scheduled for Friday, May 2nd and Saturday, May 3rd 2008 and we’ve planned a fun-filled action packed event. The Parks and Recreation Department has been working since mid January preparing for this event and have selected some new activities and entertainment to make the weekend fun for the entire community. The following is an outline of the event and the times the Commissioners need to be at the event for introductions and photo opportunities.
This year’s event had an approved budget of $58,000. As a result of careful planning, the staff was able to hold the event costs down and is pleased to report that the total cost for the event including fireworks, entertainment and advertising is slightly less then $40,000 - a saving of about $18,000 to the General Fund Budget. Although we are spending less on the event, we believe that the event is still going to be of the same caliber as of previous years.
To help offset some of the costs of the event, we reduced the number of paid musical acts, contracted with a carnival company to provide rides and games at no cost to the City, limited paid advertising to only 4 newspaper advertisements (compared to 10 last year), hired a banner plane to fly over the event and advertise and got free radio spots from Big 105.9 FM thru the Paul and Ron morning show.
