SUBJECT:     Purchase of Water Splash Area Components

In July 2006, the Commission authorized the City Manager to enter into an agreement with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Recreation Division for the FRDAP Grant to make renovations to the Jerry Resnick Aquatic Center.  These renovations include the installation of a water slide in the pool’s dive well, renovations to restrooms, office complex, landscaping, installation of a water playground, and a ground playground.   The total project cost is estimated at $378,640.00, which is a 50/50 split between the FRDAP Grant and the City’s match.

Since July of 2006, the Department has completed all phases of the project with the exception of the installation of the water splash area.  During the Commission Meeting held on June 19, 2007, the Commission authorized staff to contract with Aquatic Technologies as the project engineer for the installation of the water splash play area.  One of the jobs of Aquatic Technologies was to not only design the play area but also solicit various vendors for the best possible price.  Currently, Aquatic Technologies has solicited a Request for Quote from the 5 biggest water splash manufactures in the industry today that also have the reputation of providing the best equipment.

The project engineer expects to get the quotes back within the next 10 days which will enable us to review various pieces and finalize the design.  Once the design is finalized, we would like to proceed in purchasing the components so we can begin construction in early October 2007.  In order to meet this time line, we would need to purchase the items during the Commission recess in August.  It is our intention to proceed with the ordering, using the City Managers purchasing authority then bring the item back to the Commission for ratification in September with the exact project cost.  The total expected cost for the components at this time is approximately $60,000 and we will work to get the best possible price.

We appreciate your consideration in allowing us to move forward with the project at this time. This will enable us to have the facility ready for the re-opening of the pool in March of 2008.
