SUBJECT:     Purchase of Water Splash Play Area Filtration System

In May 2007, the Commission authorized the City Manager to enter into an agreement with Aquatic Technologies for the design and engineering phase of the water splash play area at the Aquatic Center.  As a part this process, Aquatic Technologies needed to design the water re-circulation system and chemical feeding system.  Per Department of Health regulations, commercial pools and water features are required to feed chemicals through an automated process.   The existing pool and wading pool are already 100% automated.

There are two manufactures in the area that build these types of feeding systems. The Corporate Offices of both companies, Commercial Energy Systems (C.E.S.) and Com Pac Filtration, are located in the State of Florida. C.E.S. is the current equipment supplier for our main and wading pools. However, in spite of being contacted on numerous occasions, they failed to submit a quote.  Therefore, Com Pac Filtration was the only manufacturer that submitted the quote. Com Pac’s total cost for this project is $37,485.20, which will include all distribution/suction lines, chemical feeders and holding tanks.

The staff thoroughly discussed Com Pac’s ability to handle this job and was satisfied with their response. In addition, they received an excellent overview by our engineer, Aquatic Technologies. Please be advised that Aquatic Technologies is one of the leaders in the field of designing aquatic facilities, including Splash Play Areas. Therefore, we fully support this selection by Aquatic Technologies and their review and recommendations are extremely helpful as we move towards completion of this project.

The total cost of $37,485.20 is within the renovation budget set aside for this project and the funds are available in the Parks and Recreation Department’s Capital Budget 1217074-563100.

With the approval of the Commission tonight, we will order the filtration equipment so that the Water Splash Play Area can be opened with the re-opening of the pool on March 1, 2008.
