SUBJECT:     Boxing/Mixed Martial Arts Event at City’s Gymnasium

City Staff was recently approached by a representative from Boxer Roy Jones Jr.’s Square Ring Productions about the possibility of holding a Boxing/Mixed Martial Arts Event at the City Gymnasium on Saturday, March 14th, 2009.  The promoter is looking to sell between 600 and 700 tickets ranging from $30 to $60 for the event using both folding chairs for floor seats and the bleachers.

If this event is successful, the promoter stated his interest in holding future matches in the gym.  A group of employees including the City Manager, Police Chief and myself along with Mayor Brady met with the promoter and discussed the proposal in detail.  With the direction of the City Manager over the past few weeks, we have been able to work out all the details of the event.  All conditions have been agreed upon by the Promoter and are attached as Exhibit A.

The City does not have a formal policy to rent out the gym. Since we want to control the access and activities of the facility so any events proposed for the gym are presented to the City Commission for approval and the City of North Lauderdale needs to be listed as the title sponsor.

The City’s role in this event will be very limited – basically we will provide on-site chairs (300-500), folding tables and barricades.  The promoter for the event will pay for 3 Parks and Recreation Department employees and 4 Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputies to be on-site during and after the event.

In order to move forward with this event, we are seeking Commission’s approval tonight.  This approval pertains to the March event only. Any future events proposed by Boxer Roy Jones Jr.’s Square Ring Promotion will be presented to the Commission for approval prior to holding those events.

RECOMMENDATION:

The City Administration recommends Commission consideration’s and approval of the attached resolution authorizing the use of the City Gym and City’s Sponsorship for the March 14, 2009 Boxing/Mixed Martial Arts Event promoted by Square Ring Productions.
