In January 2007, staff reported to the Commission that the pool renovations underway at that time were at a point where we had spent almost the first half of the funds allocated and once we exceeded the first half, we would have to move forward with the completion of the project. At that meeting, the Commission authorized staff to proceed with the project as originally proposed in the FRDAP Grant Application.
The first phase of the project, the water slide and picnic areas have been completed and are in full operation. To date, the response to the water slide by the public has been very positive and beyond our expectation. A comparison of attendance figures for the months of March 2006 and March 2007 show a huge increase in the overall use of the pool due to the water slide. The total number of people who used the pool in March 2006 for open swim was only 37, compared to 975 in March of 2007.
At this time, we are ready to begin the 2nd phase of the project - the installation of a play structure. Upon the completion of this phase we will begin working on the final phase, which includes the installation of the water playground.
In order to provide the kids greater
opportunity to be active, we are planning to install a version of a rock wall
Instead of putting in a standard play structure. It is a very small structure
similar to the one proposed for the pool at
The rock wall that we have selected is manufactured by Dominica/Game Time Recreation Products and they are one of the leaders in the playground equipment industry. The total cost of this structure, including installation, is $14,279.43 and is available off of the US Communities Grant #040376, a federal contract. Funding for this component is available in the Parks and Recreation Department Grant Fund line item # 306-7074-572-63-33.
