Our
department is known by many names and its name changes as
functions and responsibilities evolve.
To the city we are funded as “Management Information
Systems” (MIS), to employees we are the “Information Technology”
department or (IT). We
have also been known as the department of Information Systems
and Services or (ISS). You may note the word “Information” in all of
our names. Information
is key to our operation and Technology is key to our function.
We
help all areas to bring useful information into our systems
and we provide a variety of distribution methods for that
data. Our function is
to provide the systems that house the data on solid and closely
meshed Systems Infrastructures.
These infrastructures of software and hardware consist
of both mature and new technologies. Newly purchased technologies are in-line with
the city’s vision and needs.
So no matter what you call us, we are the heart and
soul of the city's electronic information.
Our
responsibilities include providing city leaders and managers
with technology research and guidance, effective and efficient
management of installed systems and 24x7 computer operations.
We provide users with help desk support, training and
equipment. As project
managers we act as liaisons between departments and administration,
implementing new systems for city employees and the citizens
of North Lauderdale.
Currently
the department supports approximately 100 users over a campus
wide fiber optic Local Area Network that connects City Hall
to various facilities such as the Teen Center,
Aquatics, Parks and Recreation, Utilities and Public Works. Additional Wireless and ADSL networks connect
outlying buildings like Fire Stations 34 & 44 and Code
Compliance to City Hall.
At
city hall several Windows and an IBM Server are connected
to switches, routers and firewalls that support user Desktop
Computers, Imaging Stations, Work Group Printers and Laptops.
These servers house the business software, email, share
files, archives, web sites and security systems used by our
employees and citizens.
In
Fiscal Year 2007, two large projects are currently planned. These are an updated computer business system
to support the near and long term goals of the city and an
upgrade or replacement of the current city telephone system.
Two committees were formed and have been reviewing the desired
operating factors, features and functions of both systems.
These projects are tentatively slated for installation in
FY07 with one completing in FY07 and the other completing
in late FY08.
Internally
we work with management and employees to improve processes
and business system interactions. We hope that you use the city web site to learn
more about departmental functions and workings of the city. Our web site is updated periodically by the Public
Information Officer and with its interactive features provides
the community with a high level of insight and information. If you have suggestions for improvements in any
area, let the City of North
Lauderdale know about them.
